Chepu pronounced “Sha pu” is the name of the Tibetan Sky God who directs all those flying carpets in the sky from crashing into each other. Open since 2003, Chepu, is the inspiration of the owner, Tsajon, who has been dealing in carpets since 1970. This is Tsajon's first retail Outlet. Prior to the opening of Chepu, Tsajon sold and collected exclusively for private customers and his personal collection. Recognizing the need for a retail outlet on the Island of Kauai, he opened Chepu on the second floor of the Kauai Design Center in historic old Kapaa Town on Kauai's east shore. Chepu now provides Kauai with the only full service outlet for Oriental and Modern design handmade wool and silk carpets on the island. Carpets are made in Nepal, Indian, Pakistan and China in all sizes, shapes, and designs. Our carpets are hand knotted on cotton using only the finest Tibetan and New Zealand wool with up to 150 knots per square inch, In the case of our silk carpets they are made with up to 1000 knots per sq. inch. None of our carpets are made with child labor but rather are crafted by refugee families from Afghanistan and Tibet. Your purchase helps these refugees to thrive and make a living. Chepu also carries a collection of decorative arts such as Burmese Lacquer Lamps, Tibetan furniture, Laotian Raindrums, Indian Bronze Buddhas, Nepalese Temple oil lamps, Japanese Tanzu, Chinese Scrolls, Tibetan Thangkas, and outdoor Garden Decor.
