Welcome to our collection of applique paintings. Applique refers to a unique needlework technique in which pieces of fabric, embroidery, or other materials are sewn onto another piece of fabric to create designs, patterns or pictures. It is particularly suitable for work which is to be seen from a distance, such as in banner-making. This technique was brought to Tibet from China where it was perfected in the Ming Dynasty using the "forbidden stitch". In Tibet this technique was used to make huge Thangka style banners of deities hung on the side of the monasteries for festive occasions.
