Quick Overview

19th century figure of a standing Mandalay Buddha.

See Product Details below for more information.

This Buddha’s eyes are of interest as they are shell inlay, a well known practice in Mandalay Period art. The delicate, soulful expression on this Buddha harmonizes the eye and spirit of the beholder to the meditative calm and focus of the enlightened one. We see the slight curve of a smile, the Buddha’s benevolence and mirth.
The right hand of the Buddha holds a myrobalan fruit (terminalia chebula) between thumb and index finger symbolizing the attainment of enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Legend tells that the God Indra gifted the Buddha with this fruit for its medicinal properties. Held in the varada mudra this Buddha also emanates a sense of welcome, charity, giving, compassion and sincerity.

At the end of the 18th Century a new style of Buddha images emerged in Burma. Centered around the city of Mandalay which was considered the heart of Burma’s Buddhist art, thanks to the patronage of King Mandon, a devout Buddhist himself. Mandalay Period art focused on a realism in the features of the Buddha and his attire. The style of the faces is oval with long, pointed nose, full lips and almond eyes defined by clear eyebrows. Elongated to the shoulders, the curved earlobes are placed well behind the round ushnisha, a protrusion at the top of the head illustrating the Buddha’s enlightenment. Also notable is the wide, glass inlaid stripe at the rim of the face clearly delineating the forehead from the hair. This life sized Healing Buddha wears a diaphanous robe with lavishly ornamented, royal long sleeved bodice. We see that the master carver took great pleasure in revealing the delicate folds of fabric from the heart of the hardwood. We see the borders of the robe and forehead decorated with intricate glass inlay.

This piece will grace any home or collection with all the serenity of the final Golden Era of Burmese Art. A life sized masterpiece from Mandalay, this Healing Buddha brings with it a regeneration of the spirit.
